Mad Hatters Tea Party Themed Wedding

Still keeping up with the wedding themed posts - this weekend's wedding cake was based on a sketch drawn by the bride.

I've been so excited about this cake since our initial meeting back in September last year for so many reasons - the whimsical style of the cake was a massive attraction for me but also because the bride was getting married in a cave... yes, a cave!! All sparkly and lit up and because she had to wear a hard hat, rather than settling for a bog standard issue plain yellow she custom made one that was covered in diamantes. Love it!

After many hours of work with lots of little details such as a pocket watch, caterpillar, tea cup with dormice and a plate of cakes the final cake looked like this:

Weddings & Brooch Bouquets

Wedding season is really upon us now and I absolutely love weddings. Meeting up with new brides to be is always a massive deal for me as I'm so keen to chat about everything to do with their wedding.

In the past I ran a couple of florist shops and weddings were always a massive highlight for me, from the initial planning stage of the colours & designs right up to the day itself. It really is a great honour to be able to be involved in a couples special day.

From time to time I really do miss floristry, now that the wedding season is in full swing I'm often reminded of how beautiful and exquisite the displays are through the powers of Facebook and Twitter.

One of my very good friends has set up a beautiful brooch bouquet company specialising in weddings and she makes some amazingly gorgeous designs. This is one of my favourites:

Treasure Bouquet

If you get a moment then pop along to her facebook page and take a look at some of her other designs.

Black & White Damask Wedding

Last year I was contacted by a bride in the Southampton area who was getting married locally at the Tudor Grange Hotel in  Bournemouth and wanted to meet up to discuss her cake ideas for the wedding.

Initially our discussions were on email so by the time we came to meet we had a good idea between us of what she wanted to have create. All we had to do was a cake tasting session and go over the finer details of the cake and delivery and it meant I got to spend time getting to know her and her mum.

I know I keep saying my customers are lovely, but they really are - you just know their cake will be perfect and they'll be super happy with the results because you've built up such a good rapport with them that you feel like you've known them for years.

The day before the wedding I had a call from the bride's mum - just confirming a few bits and I guess seeking reassurance that all was fine for tomorrow  She was concerned that they wouldn't get to see me as they were off having their hair done first thing so we agreed I'd ensure that I tried to time it so they'd hopefully be back to see me and the cake before I left.

When I got to the venue to set up the cake I first saw the bride's mum who immediately rushed over to me and gave me a hug - I was so touched and it just made me feel a part of their special day.

The "icing on the cake" for want of a better phrase was that the bride's parents had ordered a bespoke cake knife and server with a damask theme and amazingly the pattern on these matched the pattern on one of the cake tiers. This was completely unplanned as they didn't know what actual design on the cake was going to look like.

I just had my mini spirit level out and was checking the final straightness of the cake when in burst this amazing character of a woman squealing at how lovely the room had been set up when she turned around and spotted me and the cake. A massive grin broke out on her face and she grabbed me and hugged me thanking me so much for the cake and telling me it was perfect.

It totally made my day - it's the little moments like that that make my world. Being the soppy mare that I am I felt the tears welling up.. had to pull myself together quickly :o)

Colin the Caterpillar

An order came in for a caterpillar cake, to define it further we asked - is it the Hungry Caterpillar? No, apparently it's for a guy called Colin so they wanted a caterpillar cake as M&S have a range of Colin the Caterpillar sweets.

We decided upon a hungry caterpillar/m&s hybrid variety and this was the well received result.

Time to catch up

It's been a while since we posted, we just never seem to get around to writing blog posts these days - sorry about that!

It's been a busy couple of months at the bakery and we've worked with some truly lovely customers. It's great to be able to have such varied work to do and not be set to a defined style, it makes it all so new and so exciting each time and I love that.

Today's post is a round up of my most favourite cakes since February, hope you enjoy!

First up were some brightly coloured cupcakes in March - added a little bit of sunshine to what had been a dreary month.

This was soon followed by Easter with some chocolate nest cupcakes.

In April we had two orders for Poole parkrun's second birthday - they had a Where's Wally theme so we baked a cake to suit.

We also had an order from a couple that used to live in the UK but had since emigrated to Australia. As they were back visiting that weekend they decided to order an Australian themed cake for the event.

All deliveries are now done for Valentine's Day - we got to see lots of happy faces unwrapping their boxes of goodies which was lovely.

Here's a selection of a few of our favourites.

Robot Cake with Rotating Head & Robot Noises

Watching the delight on the three year old boy's face when he saw his birthday cake really made my day, he was so excited and couldn't stop laughing and wanting to stand as close to it as possible. You could literally see his eyes light up.

This has to be one of my favourite cakes I've made - the fact that the head rotates and makes robot noises really adds to it - you can watch a video of it below.

a sprinkle of love

I love sprinkle cakes - this one is a cute 4" cake covered in cappuccino pearls but I've got a couple of orders coming up over the next few months with brightly coloured hundreds and thousands which really does look ace.

Love Birds

Crazy to think it's less than a month until Valentine's Day. We're currently taking orders for our standard cupcakes and also these cute Love Bird boxed cupcakes. There are a couple of other special additions to our range for this year - keep your eyes peeled and we should hopefully have pictures up by the end of next week.

We're also enjoying the snow here today - it's not that often that it settles on the Dorset coast so we've taken full advantage this morning by sledging & throwing snowballs.
